Where to find us
Our dedicated Student Health practice is located on the University of Liverpool campus, just behind the Guild of Students. We provide healthcare services tailored specifically to students and welcome registrations from students attending any university. For Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) students, our Brownlow Health @ Marybone practice may be a more convenient option due to its location.
About us
Brownlow Health is a family of four NHS GP practices serving patients across six sites in and around Liverpool city centre. We have strong partnerships with local universities and the wider student welfare community, working alongside hall wardens, tutors, international student services, Guild officers and university counselling teams to support students' health and wellbeing throughout their studies.

General Medical Care
As a full‑service NHS GP practice, we provide day‑to‑day medical support including diagnosis, ongoing care, vaccinations, mental health support, and long‑term condition management.
We also host a sports physiotherapy clinic and a psychology service.
Vaccinations
Are your vaccinations up to date?
We offer free HPV, Meningitis ACWY and MMR vaccinations.
Health and Wellbeing coaches
Our Health and Wellbeing Coaches are here to support you in creating personalised plans to manage your health, including stress, weight, diabetes, physical activity, healthy eating and pain management.
Saturday clinics are sometimes available.
Online Health Support
You can get online medical advice, make administrative requests, or use online services such as repeat prescriptions and health record access via the NHS app or Patient Access.
Accessibility and Facilities
We provide step‑free access, wheelchair access, and disabled WC facilities at our Student Health Centre.
Opening hours for Student Health (term-time)
Monday–Friday: 8:00am–6:30pm Wednesday, closed from midday on the last Wednesday of the month
Weekends: Closed
Outside of term time you can visit us at one of our other sites, so you always have access to Brownlow Health during the core opening hours.

FAQs
I have an ongoing referral. Will this still be okay if I change GP, or will my referral be cancelled?
No, changing your GP will not affect any existing referrals. Your referral will remain active and you will stay on the waiting list for any appointments. For example, if your previous GP referred you to a hospital, that referral will continue as normal.
If you need a referral to a local hospital or service after registering with us, we can arrange this for you.
If you are already under the care of a hospital consultant or specialist and would like your care transferred to Liverpool, we can help guide you through the process once you are registered. In most cases, transfers of care between specialists are arranged directly by the hospital teams rather than by your GP.
How will I access my prescriptions during the summer holidays, Easter or Christmas?
You can request your medication at any time using the NHS App and nominate a local pharmacy wherever you are staying. Alternatively, you can contact the surgery and we will be happy to help.
We can send prescriptions electronically to any pharmacy in England or Wales. If you are staying in Scotland or Northern Ireland, we can advise on the best way to arrange your medication during your time away.
If you know you will be travelling during holiday periods, please request your medication in good time to avoid running out.
If I need urgent medical attention while I’m at home, how can I access care?
If your medical issue is not urgent, we can often offer a telephone consultation, or you may wish to attend a local walk-in centre.

If you will be away from Liverpool for a longer period, you may also be able to register temporarily with a GP practice near your home address to access care while you are there.
Is NHS healthcare free?
Yes. Most NHS healthcare services are free at the point of use, including GP appointments, consultations with nurses, and NHS hospital treatment for eligible patients.
Are prescriptions free?
Prescription charges depend on your circumstances. Some people are entitled to free NHS prescriptions, including those who qualify for certain exemptions.
All contraceptive medicines are provided free of charge.
If you think you may be entitled to free prescriptions, exemption forms are available from the practice. Please ask at reception for assistance.
If you are not eligible for free prescriptions, the standard NHS prescription charge applies for each prescribed item which is currently £9.95.
What vaccines can I have as a student?
Depending on your age and vaccination history, you may be eligible for the following vaccines:
If you are not eligible for an NHS vaccine, some vaccinations may be available privately through pharmacies.
If you are unsure which vaccines you need, please contact the practice and we can check your vaccination record and advise you.
DSA (Disabled Students’ Allowance) Forms
If you need a DSA form completed, please bring the form to the practice along with evidence of any confirmed diagnosis or disability (not suspected).
We can only provide information and supporting evidence for conditions that have been formally diagnosed and recorded in your medical records. We are unable to complete forms based on suspected or undiagnosed conditions.
Please allow sufficient time for the form to be processed, as completion may require review by a clinician.
Will I be removed from my home GP if I register here?
Yes. In most cases, you can only be registered with one GP practice at a time. When you register with us, you will automatically be deregistered from your previous GP practice.
Your medical records will be transferred electronically to ensure continuity of care, and your new GP will have access to your relevant medical history.
If you are only living in Liverpool temporarily, you may wish to consider whether registering as a temporary patient is more appropriate for your circumstances.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapy services are available to all our patients through our First Contact Physiotherapy (FCP) service, free of charge. This allows patients with muscle, joint and mobility problems to be assessed directly by a specialist physiotherapist without needing to see a GP first.
Students who purchase a Liverpool Guild of Students/Athletic Union (AU) membership may also be able to access additional physiotherapy services through the University of Liverpool.

I need a sexual health screening. What should I do?
If you would like a sexual health screening, you can contact the practice to book an appointment with one of our nurses.
Alternatively, you can attend an Axess Sexual Health Clinic, which offers confidential sexual health advice, testing and treatment services.
If you think you may need urgent advice or treatment, please contact the practice or Axess as soon as possible.
Where is the Walk-In Centre?
The Linda McCartney Centre, located at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, offers a walk-in service for minor illnesses and injuries.
